Andrew Johnson, who was the President of the United States, was impeached on Febuary 22, 1868 for high crimes and violation in office.
This was around the end of the Civil War. It was between the President and Congress. Republicans gained enough seats in congress
to override a presidental veto. Because of this, Congress and Andrew Johnson started to get annoyed with eachother, and it enacted Congress to charge several limits to the Presidents power over the military and power to remove their executive officials from Government positions. Edwin Stanton was fired by the President, and in retaliation he locked himself inside his office, and the House of Representatives wanted to impeach Andrew Johnson. Then a trial was held, and Andrew Johnson was saved his job by 1 vote. Stanton then resigned, and Andrew Johnson served out the rest of his Presidency.
