"Neither Slavery nor involuntary servitude exacept as a punshiment of crime whereof the party shall have been duly convicted, shall exist within the United States, or any place subject to their jurisdiction."

  • Ratified on December 6, 1865.
  • The Thirteenth Amendment offically abolished and continues to prohibit slavery with limited exceptions, such as those who convicted crime, prohibits involuntary servitude.
  • April 1864 the Senate passed it but the House did not.
  • Abraham Lincoln took an active role garrenteed passage through congress.
  • Insisted that it be added to the republican party platform for the upcoming elections.
  • It was a solution to the slavery issue in great success
  • House passed the bill in January 1865
  • Congress had passed the 13th amendment to guarantee the legality and perpetuity of slavery in the slave states in rather then to end it.
